Harry Johnson (1937-47) is widely regarded as the club's all-time leading goalscorer when pre-league records are included. In the 1938-39 season alone, Johnson scored 50 goals in league play and 15 in six FA Cup qualifying matches, totalling an extraordinary 69 goals across all competitions in a single campaign.
Johnson's prolific record came during the Midland League era before Scunthorpe were admitted to the Football League in 1950. His remarkable goalscoring feats helped establish the club as a force in non-league football and paved the way for their eventual election to the Football League.
