Iron sign highly rated midfielder James Bailey on loan from Stockport County

Scunthorpe United is delighted to announce the addition of midfielder James Bailey on loan from EFL League One side Stockport County.

The 18-year-old is a technically gifted central midfielder who was recruited by the Hatters earlier this summer, bringing an end to his five-year affiliation with Manchester United’s academy. Bailey signed his first professional contract in June 2026, putting pen to paper on a two-year deal that will keep him at Edgeley Park until the end of the 2027-28 season.

Since arriving at Stockport, Bailey has already captained the club’s U21 side, while also making his first-team debut in the EFL Trophy. He played 45 minutes in the Hatters’ 6-3 victory over Everton U21s, producing a promising display that has further heightened excitement around his potential.

During his time with Manchester United, Bailey was a regular for the Red Devils’ U18 side, making his debut at just 15 years old before establishing himself as a key member of the team. Prior to his departure from Carrington in June, Bailey had also made several appearances for the U21s, with his composure and technical ability in midfield attracting interest from a number of EFL clubs, including eventual suitors Stockport County.

Now, Bailey joins the Iron in search of his first experience of senior football, with his loan spell at the Attis Arena set to run until January.
