Scunthorpe United can confirm midfielder Oli Ewing has opted to join fellow Enterprise National League side Forest Green Rovers for an undisclosed fee.
As confirmed within our retained list, following the period after the end of the season, the club had exercised an option within his contract in a bid for him to remain with the Iron, which was rejected by the 23-year-old within seven days of our final game of the season, as per a clause within his deal which was a key stipulation to him being brought to the club initially.
The club, keen to retain Oli’s services, entered into negotiations for a new and improved contract thereafter, which would also allow the Iron to retain compensation rights should the midfielder decide to move on. Having received an offer from Forest Green which Oli was keen to accept, the two clubs negotiated over a transfer fee to mitigate the need for a tribunal.
Signing following his departure from Leicester City last summer, he caught the eye of Andy Butler during his loan spell with National League North outfit Buxton in 2024-25. The versatile midfielder made 19 appearances from February onwards when he joined the Bucks and, in that time, scored three goals including a goal of the month for his thunderous strike against South Shields.
After coming through the ranks of the Fulham academy, the Welsh youth international made the switch to Leicester in 2019 and proceeded to become a consistent performer for the Foxes development side, Making ten appearances in the Premier League 2 prior to his switch to men’s football.
With an impressive 2025-26 campaign under his belt, particularly in the first half of the season, Ewing became a standout player in the heart of the Iron midfield, contributing immediately to the club’s fortunes in scoring the winner at Tamworth on the opening day of the season. Another of his goals in claret and blue was also a match winner, slotting home the penalty at York City to gain all three points away from home, while his final goal for the club came away at Braintree Town and, although it wasn’t the winner, it did contribute to the Iron achieving maximum points.
Across all competitions, he played for the club in 49 games, 43 of which starts, and added two assists to his trio of goals.
Scunthorpe United would like to thank Oli for his contributions in the 2025-26 season, and wish him all the best for the future.
