Evans and Howe named as club and vice captain ahead of 2026-27 season

Scunthorpe United is delighted to confirm that Will Evans has been appointed Club Captain for the 2026-27 season by Iron manager Andy Butler ahead of the new National League campaign.

The experienced defender, now entering his fourth season at the Attis Arena, has worn the captain's armband on a number of occasions throughout pre-season and now steps into the role following the departure of Andrew Boyce.

Since arriving at the club, Evans has established himself as a commanding presence at the heart of the Iron defence. The centre-back has made 122 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals, and earned a reputation as a rock-solid, uncompromising defender. His importance to the squad was further underlined this summer when he committed his future to the club by signing a new one-year contract.

Meanwhile, fellow defender Callum Howe has been appointed vice-captain for the 2026-27 campaign. Howe returned to Scunthorpe United this summer following a successful spell with York City, where he captained the Minstermen to the National League title and promotion back to the EFL.

With a wealth of experience and proven leadership qualities between them, Evans and Howe will play key roles both on and off the pitch as Andy Butler's side prepares for the challenges of the new season.

Speaking to the Iron Insider, manager Andy Butler commented: "Will has been on a three year journey with us now and I think he leads from the front, and is very similar to Boycey on the field. He's got lots of experience, does loads for the community, and I think the fans have a real engagement with him as well, and the players respect him too.

"Callum won the National League last year, and I had a good chat with him, and he didn't expect to be captain. He came into the group, and isn't going to change how he is. He's been fantastic since he's come in, and his organisational skills are there for all to see.

"Like I've said to all the players, it's not just one captain or two captains, each one has to take responsibility, it's just one player who wears an armband. We've got a leadership group of six players,
