Scunthorpe come into this fixture on great form, winning four of their last five games and currently sit in 6th in the National League. Sutton have won two of their last five and sit 21st in the league.

Andy’s Bet Club’s football analyst will break down Sutton’s recent clash with Southend to see what the statistics indicate about how they might set up against Scunthorpe.

Southend United vs Sutton United

Not only did Southend score the only goal in the game, but they also created better goalscoring chances. The home side created an xG (expected goals) of 2.98, whilst Sutton created an xG of 1.58.

Sutton dominated possession during the game, and this was down to their passing accuracy and passing distances. They had a higher passing accuracy of 83% and they also had a lower long pass percentage of 6%.

Despite having less possession, Southend won a lot more territory and had more entries into the opposition half (62) and also had more entries into the opposition penalty box (18).

Final Thoughts

One of Sutton’s strengths is their work out of possession. They have averaged a PPDA (Passes per Defensive Action) of 9.12, which is one of the most intense in the league. Scunthorpe are not too far behind them with a PPDA of 9.68.

The sides are also fairly well matched in their possession stats this season. Scunthorpe have averaged a ball possession of 49.2%, whilst Sutton have averaged a ball possession of 52.2%.

The gap in league positions may suggest this may be a comfortable win for the home side, but the in-possession and out of possession stats suggest that it may be a tighter game than the table suggests.

Both sides have predominantly used a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 this season, however, Sutton have occasionally switched to a back three, so it will be interesting to see how they shape up against an in-form Scunthorpe.
