Scunthorpe United is saddened to learn of the passing of former Director of the club Brian Borrill at the age of 84.
Passing away on December 22nd, we have subsequently received permission from the family to post a tribute to Brian, who served on our Board for around 16 years.
Appointed in November 1988 as a Director soon after the club moved to Glanford Park and enjoyed and endured the highs and lows that football brings over that period involving play-off heartache against Blackpool in 1992, play-off triumph against Leyton Orient in 1999 and observing a number of players forging their careers in claret and blue.
Brian resigned from the Board in April 2004 but always remained part of football in the local area thereafter. Heavily involved in junior football, Brian was involved with the Jack Kalson Junior League, and has been an advocate for its success for most of the league's existence. In addition, he served as the Alkborough Cricket Club Chairman from the 1970s through until his passing, with over 50 years of service to the club, alongside a Treasurer role he handed over a few years ago.
A well known member of the local community, representing local football through and through, he was also a dear friend to many, Brian will be sadly missed by all who knew him, and he leaves a huge gap of service to local sport.
Funeral details:
A service and committal will take place on Tuesday, 13th January 2026, at Woodlands Crematorium, Scunthorpe, 10am. Family have specified that black mourning attire is not required for those attending the service.
Family flowers only please, by request. Donations in lieu of flowers if so desired are for Alkborough Cricket Club, and may be gratefully received at the service.
Everyone at Scunthorpe United would like to send their condolences to Brian's family and friends at this difficult time.
