A message from Chair Michelle Harness ahead of the 2026-27 season getting underway this afternoon

As we prepare to kick off another exciting season, I would like to take a moment to reflect on what has been a tremendously positive and productive pre-season for everyone connected with the club.

There is, however, one moment from the summer that has touched everyone connected with Scunthorpe United. The passing of Kevin Keegan was a deeply sad moment for our club and for everyone who knew, admired and loved him.

Kevin is, quite simply, a legend of Scunthorpe United. His contribution to the club and the memories he created will live with us for generations to come. He holds a special place in the history of our football club, and it has been incredibly moving to see supporters, former players, staff and the wider football community come together to remember him.

As a club, we have been proud to provide a number of opportunities for Kevin's life and legacy to be remembered, including the opening of a book of condolence for supporters to share their memories and pay their respects. We also came together to mark his passing with a minute's applause against Chesterfield and in the Iron Aid fixture last Sunday, giving everyone the opportunity to celebrate a remarkable figure in our history. These gestures can never truly reflect what Kevin meant to so many people, but they demonstrate the affection and respect in which he continues to be held.

In the 75th minute today, we invite all supporters for a further tribute in taking part in a minute’s applause in his memory as we once again pay tribute to his legacy, both in football and in particular at Scunthorpe United.

The summer has also given us some wonderful and memorable moments. The United by Steel Gala was a fantastic occasion, bringing together our community, sponsors, supporters and volunteers in celebration of everything that makes this club so special. It was followed by our Legends game, which provided a wonderful opportunity to honour those who have worn the shirt with pride while creating new memories for everyone in attendance. Both events demonstrated the strength of our football family and the incredible spirit that surrounds the club. I must also thank each and every player who came back to wear claret and blue once more; the event simply wouldn't have been what it was without you.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all of our sponsors for their continued backing. Your support is invaluable and plays a vital role in helping the club move forward both on and off the pitch. I would also like to thank our loyal supporters, whose passion and commitment never waver, and the many volunteers who generously give their time throughout the year. Quite simply, this club would not be what it is without you.

As supporters return to the stadium, I'm sure you'll agree that it has never looked better. The playing surface has been a significant investment during the close season and is in fantastic condition. The ground itself is looking fresh, and there has been an enormous amount of work taking place behind the scenes to ensure everything is ready for the new campaign. Work will continue over the coming weeks, with the MKM Executive Lounge undergoing a makeover while other areas of the stadium have also received some attention. From our ground staff and volunteers to those working quietly behind the scenes, countless hours have gone into preparing for the first matchday, and they all deserve enormous credit.

Now, as the preparations come to an end, the focus shifts to the football. The foundations have been laid, the hard work has been done, and it is now over to our management team and players to take centre stage. We know they will give everything they have every time they step onto the pitch, representing this club with pride, commitment and determination.

As we begin another season together, I hope we can all continue to play our part in creating a positive, welcoming and passionate atmosphere both home and away. Together, we are stronger, and we've shown that over the last few seasons. Now it's time to do it all over again for the next nine months.

I would also like to make one personal mention. Even under difficult personal circumstances, James Moody has remained incredibly solid and committed, giving his strength to the club and myself every single day. That level of dedication does not go unnoticed, and I would like to place on record my sincere thanks and appreciation to James for everything he continues to do for Scunthorpe United and for me personally.

And, as we take our places together at the start of this new campaign, I hope we can also take a moment to remember Kevin and everything he meant to Scunthorpe United. Football is built on memories, people and shared experiences, and Kevin's place in the story of this club will never be forgotten.

And, most importantly, let us remember Kevin Keegan with the respect, affection and appreciation that a true Scunthorpe United legend deserves.
