Scunthorpe currently sit in the play-off positions in the National League, whilst Altrincham are 15th. However, Altrincham come into this fixture in a better run of form, picking up 10 points in their last five games compared to Scunthorpe only picking up eight points in the same period.

Andy’s Bet Club’s football analyst will break down Altrincham’s recent clash with Southend United to see what the statistics indicate about how they might set up against Scunthorpe.

Southend United vs Altrincham

Southend were very dominant in this fixture, and not only did they have more possession and shots, they created higher quality chances with an xG of 2.58 compared to Altrincham’s xG of 0.31. Altrincham did have a man sent off in the game, but it was in the 86th minute, Southend were already 2-0 up.

Southend were a lot more accurate on the ball, particularly when higher up the pitch. The home side had a higher accuracy in their forward passes (77.4%), long passes (51.2%), progressive passes (79.5%) and passes into the final third (75.9%).

One of the main problems Altrincham had in the match was that they were unable to create chances from build-up (positional attacks). They were only able to create one shot from 7.7% of their positional attacks. In comparison, Southend created 14 shots from positional attacks, 46.7%.

Off the ball, Southend were a lot more intense with their press, with a PPDA (Passes Allowed per Defensive Action) of 10.8,6 whereas Altrincham were a lot more passive with a PPDA of 14.84.

Final Thoughts

Despite not winning their last fixture, both Scunthorpe and Altrincham have been on decent runs of form and will be looking to get back to winning ways in this upcoming match.

Although Scunthorpe have scored eight more goals than Altrincham this season, Alty have created a higher xG (30.24 vs 27.33), but they haven’t been able to convert as many of those chances into goals.

The season statistics show that Altrincham have had more possession in their games than Scunthorpe. However, if Altrincham put in a similar performance on the ball as they did in their last fixture, Scunthorpe will be able to regain possession high up the pitch, especially if they press as intensely as they did in their last match, where they had a PPDA of 7.49.

Both sides have consistently lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation this season or a slight variation of it, so it will be interesting to see how the game pans out if they match each other up in the same shape.
