Scunthorpe United can confirm duo Jacob Butterfield and Danny Elliott will be leaving the club upon the expiry of their contracts after both rejected new terms.

Veteran midfielder Butterfield joined the Iron on a free transfer following his departure from Scottish side St Johnstone in the Summer of 2022. While in claret and blue, Butterfield made 86 appearances in all competitions and scored 12 goals in that time. He fast became a fan favourite amongst Iron’s loyal supporters with his trademark long shots that always troubled the opposition.

Some memorable moments from Butterfield’s stay included his long-ranged debut goal against Yeovil in the first match of the 2022-23 season, which helped United win the encounter 2-1. This will be remembered along with his sensational free-kick strike against Brackley in front a packed-out Attis Arena, as he gave Michelle Harness the perfect start to her ownership reign by scoring the only goal of the game.

Meanwhile, front man Elliott joined United in January 2023 from then-National League side Boreham Wood. Elliott sprung into form in claret and blue and, despite not being able to help save the Iron from relegation, he managed to kickstart his goal tally which carried over into the season that followed.

Some memorable moments from Elliott’s time with the club include his devious double against his former club Boston United last season that saw him continue a strong run of form. Furthermore, he will also be remembered for his iconic celebration following his second goal against Scarborough that saw him climb the wall of the stand and celebrate emphatically with the supporters.

Scunthorpe United would like to place on record their thanks to both Jacob and Danny for their service to the club and wish them both well for the future.

Meanwhile, talks are progressing very positively for all remaining negotiations, with the club hoping to have confirmation that all other players will remain at the club for the 2024-25 season. This is coupled with potential new arrivals in the offing (with all signings for the 2024-25 season available as a digital transfer sponsorship package).

First team manager Andy Butler will provide an update early next week, as we sit down with the new gaffer following his first month in the role.
