In memoriam: Ian Hamilton

6 September 2023

Scunthorpe United is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Ian Hamilton, at the age of 55.

Born in Stevenage, he began his career at Southampton before joining Cambridge United in 1988. Scunthorpe would be his next move in the same year, where he would spend the next four years of his career.

For United, he would feature 145 times, scoring 18 goals from midfield. His performances would earn him a move to West Bromwich Albion in 1992, earning the Iron £160,000. Six years at the Baggies would see him reach 282 appearances, playing an important role in Albion's promotion via the play-offs from Division Two in 1993, netting a total of 23 goals for the side across his spell there.

He would go on to spend two years at Sheffield United, with a loan spell at Grimsby Town included, before ending up at Notts County, Lincoln City and Woking.

After retirement as a footballer he worked as an IT business development manager.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends at this sad time.
