Experienced goalkeeper Aaron Chapman joins the Iron

6 February 2023

Scunthorpe United is delighted to have signed experienced goalkeeper Aaron Chapman.

The 32-year-old arrives at Glanford Park from Stevenage where he has been understudy to Taye Ashby-Hammond since joining the club in the summer.

After a couple of seasons at Northern Premier League side Belper Town, where he made 58 appearances, Chapman signed for then-League Two side Chesterfield and would enjoy a loan spell at Chester during his first campaign, making 16 appearances in the Conference Premier.

His only appearance for the Spireites was in 2014-15 coming against the Iron in a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie at Glanford Park after replacing Tommy Lee in the seventh minute. Two further loans at Accrington Stanley and then Bristol Rovers saw him make eight appearances, before Stanley made that move permanent ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.

In two seasons at the club, he played 70 matches, including a near ever-present 2017-18 campaign. He was part of the team that finished as Champions of League Two, with his performances not only leading to promotion, but seeing him awarded the Golden Glove with 18 clean sheets across the season. This inevitably lead to interest from Peterborough United as he completed a move to the League One side.

At 6ft 8in tall, Chapman played 39 games in all competitions during his two year stay at London Road. During the second year of his time there, he enjoyed seven games on loan at Tranmere Rovers.

He was signed by Scottish Premier League side Motherwell in October 2020 as experienced cover and competition to Trevor Carson, and played seven games in all competitions during his time north of the border.

Steve Evans then signed him for a second time in July 2021 when he made the move to Gillingham, where he made 25 appearances in his one-season stay. Evans would then persuade him to follow him to Stevenage in May 2022, just two months after he took over the club, but leaves the side in search of regular first team football.

The transfer is subject to EFL, National League and FA ratification.
