Plummer updates ahead of Iron's trip to Dorking

28 April 2023

Assistant manager Chris Plummer spoke to Iron Player as he previewed United’s final game of the season away at Dorking Wanderers this Saturday (5.30pm kick-off).

Speaking on the motive ahead of Saturday, Plummer began by saying: “We’re on a pretty poor run at the moment so we’ve got the opportunity tomorrow to go out and get something from the game and end the season on a positive, in what has been a disappointing one overall.

“We want the players who want to be out there and want to play, we’re looking at players for next year of course, but also we want to win the game.

“It was nice to see Josh Robertson come on in the last game, he’ll be with us again tomorrow, it’s good to get a chance to look at these players for next season."

Expanding further on 18-year-old Robertson, Plummer said: “I was very pleased with him, as were the staff, I thought he was excellent.

“When they go on they can freeze a little bit but I thought he actually showed some of the others what we’ve been missing in all honesty, he made a really good account of himself."

Touching on Saturday’s opposition, who have secured their National League status for the first time in their history, Plummer said: “They’ve had a very good season, a few weeks ago it looked as if they could be one of those teams that could get drawn back into the relegation battle.

“They’ve gone on a really good run recently, I think it’s one defeat in their last eight, so as a first season in [the National League] they’ve had a very good season."

“On the 3G they’re good, they like to play expansive football and we’re aware of that,” he continued.

“It does leave them open at times so we can counteract and take advantage of that but we know it’s going to be a tough game, they’re good at home, but we’ve got to go there with a bit of confidence and try to grab something for the last game of the season."

Talking on the current state of play regarding the playing squad, Plummer revealed: “It’s juggling injuries and illness which have hit the camp this week.

“We’ve had a few missing, one’s tested for COVID as well, so we’re having to juggle that but we’ll get a team out tomorrow that wants to go out there to give their all and win the game for us.

“Jake Leake and Richie Bennett trained this week, Ben Richards-Everton is one with the illness, but they look okay and are in the squad for tomorrow after getting through this week’s training.

“Harrison Poulter has trained with us this week, Ty Sellars-Fleming isn’t very well, so we’ll see whether they’ll be involved with us or not but it’s been good to have a look at them.”

Looking ahead to the summer process, Plummer explained: “The plan has been going ahead already, we’ve been at the football club for a few months now and assessed what’s here, who we hope will stay and the areas we want to strengthen in.

“We know the league we’re in now, we know the style of football we want to play, and it’s now getting those players in to add to what we’ve already got at the football club.”

He finished by saying: “It’s been ongoing, it’ll continue to be ongoing, and hopefully over the coming weeks there will be players we can announce who are coming here to join us and help us get promoted next year.

“It’s going to be tough; we’ve got to get people in and get that right, that’s going to be crucial for us.

“There’s not going to be a huge break for the staff as such as there will be a lot of work going in behind the scenes to get ready for pre-season in the end of June.”
