The Iron were beaten 1-0 at South Shields in the Fourth Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup.
United entered the game making four changes from the side that faced Aldershot the previous week, as Reagan Ogle, Elliott Whitehouse, Cameron Wilson and Dan Gallimore came in for George Taft, Mason O'Malley, Jacob Butterfield and Rob Apter.
Within two minutes, there was good play from the Iron which culminated in Wilson being played into space by Alfie Beestin. His first touch was positive before slipping in Joe Nuttall. The Iron forward was flagged offside though.
Soon after, there was a fast move from the Iron which saw Wilson and Beestin involved, before Gallimore got into space and sent a shot goalwards, which was well saved by the goalkeeper.
On eight minutes, the first corner of the game went to the Iron following an advantage played by the referee. Andrew Boyce peeled away at the back post from Whitehouse’s corner, but the Iron’s skipper headed over the bar.
Soon after, Caolan Lavery nipped in on a loose ball right on the edge of the box and was upended, resulting in a free-kick to the Iron. That came following more positive play from Beestin and Wilson. Lavery’s free-kick was blocked by the wall, with Kgosi Ntlhe sending the ball over from the follow-up.
The hosts then made advances down the left channel before Michael Woods cut onto his right foot and sent an effort goalwards. The strike took a deflection and went out for a corner.
The Iron cleared the first corner for a second, but the second delivery was deflected, looped into the box and was headed home by Dylan Mottley-Henry.
On 15 minutes, Wilson was fouled, with Whitehouse taking the kick short to Beestin. He checked onto his left foot before his drilled effort was beaten around the post for a corner.
A minute later, Lavery challenged as Whitehouse sent the corner into the box, but the goalkeeper climbed highest to take the ball.
Soon after, the home side's Heaney drilled a low effort towards goal from 25-yards which was saved by Dewhurst.
Nuttall muscled himself around a defender on the right channel in the 19th minute. He teed up Gallimore to send in an inviting first-time cross to Lavery, but the frontman couldn't connect.
In the 24th minute, a superb ball from Beestin met the run of Wilson. He took the ball neatly and cut onto his right foot, but the effort was saved.
Two minutes later, Wilson was again the architect as the Iron moved forward. He received the ball from Nuttall and shifted it back to him. The first time effort was saved before the cross from Wilson was headed away.
With 43 minutes played, Lavery managed to get the ball out of a gap which fed Nuttall. He drove into the area but had the ball taken from his toes just as he looked to shoot.
Five minutes into the second period, Dewhurst got down smartly to his left to deny an effort from the edge of the box.
Just a minute later, Dewhurst was off his line smartly to put his body in the way as Mottley-Henry was slipped into the area. Soon after, Woods sent an effort wide from 25 yards.
The first Scunthorpe change arrived on 54 minutes when O'Malley came on for Jai Rowe.
After switching to right-back following the change, Ogle chested down a South Shields goal kick and drove forward. He found Beestin on the left side, with his effort narrowly clearing the bar.
A minute after, Smith sent a first time effort towards goal from 25-yards for the hosts, with Dewhurst making a comfortable save.
With an hour gone, Blair Adams hit the inside of the post for the hosts after an earlier handball appeal was rejected. O’Malley cleared the loose ball.
Then, the Iron got in the way of a long range shot from Conor Newton to divert the ball around the post for a corner.
On 74 minutes, there was a corner to the Iron as Beestin looked to play a give-and-go taking him into the box, but the ball was stabbed away.
Straight after that, second year academy trainee Harrison Poulter replaced Lavery, following nine goals in four games so far this season.
Whitehouse charged down the left in the 79th minus and squeezed in a cross. Poulter was lurking, but the hosts headed over for a corner.
Whitehouse came off soon after, with Colin Daniel replacing him for United's final change.
The Iron pressed to try and get a late leveller, with Ntlhe heading a corner over the crossbar in the dying stages.
Scunthorpe return to action next Saturday with a trip to Southend United.
