REPORT: Sutton United 0-2 Iron

With a vast improvement required if the Iron are going to drag themselves out of their current slump in form to start the Enterprise National League season, Andy Butler’s side would be hoping to pick up a first three points on the road this season when they travelled to Gander Green Lane in order to face a strong starting Sutton United.

The Iron made a medley of changes, with Maison Campbell elected to start between the sticks for the first time this season. Elsewhere, Joe Starbuck returned from injury to regain his place at right-back, and Hull City loanee Stan Ashbee was granted his first start. Summer signing Kyle Hurst came into the United midfield to replace Alfie Beestin, with the two final changes coming on the flanks as the injured Pat Jones and the not 100% fit Ty Sellars-Fleming dropped out of the Starting XI to be replaced by Luke Brennan and Declan Howe.

After a change of ends induced by the Iron, the hosts would get proceedings underway with United sporting their 2026-27 light blue away strip for the first time.

After dealing with the Amber and Chocolates’ early set-piece threat, Scunthorpe would have a golden opportunity to open the scoring as a perfectly executed trigger press saw Danny Whitehall steal possession deep inside the Sutton half, advancing forward before sliding the ball across the penalty area and into the path of Howe, who lashed the ball towards the target, only to be denied by a last-ditch recovery tackle from Will Nightingale.

After a promising opening ten minutes from the Iron, Sutton would threaten for the first time in the game from one of Dan Urpens signature long throws, as the August player of the month nominee hurled a long ball into the area that was headed goalwards from within a crowd of bodies, forcing Campbell into a first save of the afternoon as he comfortably got down to deny.

Throughout the opening 25 minutes of action, United continued to dominate possession, advancing through the thirds with some excellent passing and limiting their opponents to chances that were only ever coming from long throws.

After what had been a so-far controlled first-half performance from the Iron, chances would start to emerge for Andy Butler’s side when, again, Whitehall’s low ball across the box to Howe was swept off his toes by a Sutton defender.

From the resultant corner, Scunthorpe would go short before Hurst whipped the ball to the back post, forcing Spike Brits to palm the ball clear of the target and out into the path of Branden Horton, whose mishit pass bounced to Hurst on the edge of the box, producing a remarkable volley into the top corner to open his account for the club in sensational style.

With half-time approaching, United would want to take their much-desired first lead of the season into the break, only managing to achieve this due to some goalkeeping heroics from Campbell. After a recycled corner found its way back to the taker, Jack Roberts, on the edge of the area, he looked to cross into the box again, but his delivery was deflected back towards the Scunthorpe goal and over the head of the goalkeeper, who scrambled back towards his goal line to palm the ball over the bar with a sensational save.

Following the restart, Scunthorpe would be looking for a second to strengthen their advantage and went in immediate search of this goal when United won the second ball from kick-off, spraying possession to Luke Brennan out on the left who rifled the ball towards Brits, although straight down the throat of the Manchester City loanee who caught the effort with ease.

The game’s next opportunity would come for the hosts, who were in desperate search of an equaliser. After winning the ball back on the half-way line, Charlie Carter’s defence-splitting pass through to Brandon Njoku saw the striker clean through on goal, but with Campbell advancing to meet him in the area, the goalkeeper would again produce a crucial stop, spreading himself wide to deny a certain leveller.

Despite their narrow advantage, Scunthorpe were still good value for their lead in this second period, looking to mount a charge for a second by making a number of alterations with half an hour to go. One of these changes, Alfie Beestin, would have an almost instant chance to double the score when he was fed the ball on the edge of the U’s area, opting to drive the ball towards the bottom corner and forcing Brits into a low stop down to his right.

With 69 minutes on the clock, United would finally break through the Amber blockade courtesy of some sublime forwards play from Whitehall who almost slid across the area on his knees in order to meet a cross into the box, chesting the ball down into the path of Tyrell Sellars-Fleming in the area, who provided a clinical finish into the bottom corner, leaving Brits with no chance as he drove the ball home.

Despite Sutton needing a remarkable comeback if they were to turn their fortunes around at Gander Green Lane, it was United who continued to threaten, very nearly adding a third to their tally when a fantastic free-kick delivery flashed across the face of goal for Danny Whitehall to attack, narrowly evading the striker as he stretched to try and turn it home from a mere matter of yards.

Over the course of the game’s closing minutes, Scunthorpe were beginning to look like the walking wounded, with several players starting to cramp up. However, when it mattered, United dug deep with a battling display to see out their first clean sheet of the season and a first professional clean sheet for Maison Campbell in what was a vital three points for the Iron.
