Daws speaks following draw at Torquay

First team manager Tony Daws provided his reaction to Iron Player after United drew 1-1 away at Torquay United on Saturday.

Alfie Beestin scored a goal early in the second half to cancel out the home side's opener, as Scunthorpe brought a share of the spoils back to North Lincolnshire.

The midfielder went on to have a another effort tipped onto the post, while United could have won it late on through chances from Joe Nuttall, George Taft and Reagan Ogle.

Daws said: "I was pleased that we managed to come from behind again, although disappointed that we went behind.

"We spoke before the game about trying to get momentum from the Dorking win last week, starting the match like that, and that was the game plan - going with three up front, but it didn't work, certainly in the first half anyway.

"We had to change in the game and that worked for us, getting us back into it. I'm just disappointed we didn't win."

Talking about the Iron's endeavours in the second period, he said: "It was almost like the flood gates had opened and it was attack after attack. To be fair to Torquay, they had some counter-attacks and a couple of chances themselves but we hit the post, with Alfie Beestin having one tipped onto there, and we've had two headed off the line. We had a lot of momentum and put them on the back foot.

"On another day we'd have scored three or four goals, but I'm really pleased because we talked about it and had to come back from a goal down. The lads are capable of doing that now. The resilience in the squad is fantastic, the belief in themselves really good and it was just a shame we couldn't get that win. The lads were gutted they couldn't.

"We just have to try and put two halves together, and push it on so we're on the front foot and attacking for the vast majority of the game.

"Obviously it's difficult because the opposition are there to try and stop you, and will fight to win the game because that's how professional football is, but from where we were to where we are, I feel there's been progress. We're competitive, stay in games and are capable of winning matches, so I'm pleased with the players."
