In memoriam: Peter Neale

9 June 2022

Scunthorpe United is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Peter Neale, at the age of 88.

Peter, born in Bolsover, began his career at Oldham Athletic, where he played between 1955 and 1959, scoring 28 goals in 117 appearances.

Peter was part of the Iron's squad between 1959 and 1966, which included our halcyon days in the old Second Division.

The central defender made 245 Iron appearances in all competitions, scoring eight times, in games against Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town, Plymouth Argyle, Stoke City, Queens Park Rangers,

He made his debut in a home game against Brighton and Hove Albion in October 1958 and affectionally became known as 'Noddy Neale' once the fans got to know him.

His hallmark was strong tackling, which brought cheers for the home supporters and shrieks of anger from the opposition camp.

After leaving the Old Show Ground, he went on to play for Chesterfield and Scarborough.

The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the club are with Peter's family and friends.
