Luke Matheson joins the Iron on loan

15 January 2022

Scunthorpe United is delighted to have completed the signing of right-back Luke Matheson on loan from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old signs in time to be in contention for Saturday's away game at Exeter City and will take the Number 41 shirt.

The Fallowfield-born player came through the ranks at Keith Hill's former club Rochdale, making his first team debut in September 2018 against Bury at the age of 15 years and 336 days, becoming the club's youngest ever debutant.

His league debut followed in the subsequent January and he went on to make 31 appearances, netting twice. While there, he scored the equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup third round before signing for Wolves in January 2020 for a reported seven-figure fee. Matheson then rejoined Dale for the remainder of that season.

Capped for England at Under-17 and Under-18 level, he has also enjoyed loan stints at Ipswich Town and Hamilton Academical during the past two seasons.
