Simon Mather to referee Sutton United away clash

The Manchester-based referee will travel to Gander Green Lane for his 24th game of the season, and his 13th in Sky Bet League Two. The current campaign is his first in the EFL after being promoted from the National League at the end of last season.

His first match in the EFL was a League Two side between Northampton Town and Port Vale, which ended 1-0 to the Cobblers. He issued six yellow cards and one red on the day, with the dismissal going to Valiants goalkeeper Lucas Covolan.

His latest encounter came in midweek, overseeing the League One match between Rotherham United and Morecambe at the New York Stadium, while his last Saturday encounter came on February 12th when he oversaw the 1-1 draw between AFC Wimbledon and Sunderland when he issued a staggering 13 yellow cards, with two of those contributing to the dismissal of the Wombles' Luke McCormick.

Saturday will be the first time he's refereed the Iron, although he has been appointed as assistant on a number of occasions down the years.

Having just been promoted from the National League themselves, Sutton have had Mather on six previous occasions over the past three seasons at that level, including twice in their promotion season in 2020-21. Across those games, he's issued 20 yellow cards and one red.

Last season, he took charge of 22 games in the National League, and one in League Two as a trial game, showing 65 yellow cards and seven reds. So far this season, he has issued 101 yellow cards and eight reds in 23 games.

On Saturday, Mather will be assisted by Gareth Viccars and Nicholas Dunn, while Stuart Butler has been appointed as the fourth official.
