Shrimpton ready for Spireites rematch

31 December 2022

Iron midfielder Finley Shrimpton has reflected on his return to the team and looked ahead to the New Year's Day away game against Chesterfield.

The 20-year-old began by speaking about his recent run in the Iron side, saying: “It’s been three games now where I’ve played and I’ve been playing well, so I’ve really enjoyed it so far. Wrexham was tough and so was Chesterfield. We went 1-0 up in both games and I think we probably deserved more out of them. We have Chesterfield again on New Year's Day so hopefully we can get a bit of revenge.”

He went on to reflect on his own performances, adding: “I feel like I’ve been doing okay. I’m doing the basics really, just working hard and showing what I can do."

The midfielder was then asked how his loan spell at Gainsborough Trinity earlier this season helped shape him for the National League. He said: “It massively did. It gave me game time, match fitness, and good opposition. I played against a lot of ex-professionals so I felt ready to come and play here. I played 15 games, I played 90 minutes in the majority of them, and I started all of them too, so that definitely helped me out.”

On the upcoming Chesterfield game, he said: “They’re a big physical side with two big centre halves, a big number nine, and they can move it as well. We know what to expect and it’s up to us really. We battled well on Boxing Day and it was just a few little mistakes which cost us, so we’re up for it. Hopefully, we can get an away win and get the three points."

Fin finished by looking ahead to the new year, adding: “It’ll set us up for a good month and a good year if we get a big result on New Year's Day against good opposition. I think if we get a good result and put in a good performance then it’ll put us in the right direction.”
