Nelson talks after Notts County loss

Scunthorpe United interim manager Michael Nelson provided his reaction following the Iron’s 4-1 home defeat against Notts County at Glanford Park.

United took the lead after just 19 minutes, as Caolan Lavery lashed home his fourth goal of the season following some strong midfield work from Alfie Beestin in the build up.

However, our lead was to be short lived against the high-flying Magpies, as goals from Quevin Castro, Jim O’Brien, Macaulay Langstaff and Cedwyn Scott sunk Scunthorpe on a disappointing afternoon.

Speaking to Iron Player following the defeat, Nelson said: "It’s disappointing. I don't think anyone expected us to get anything out of the game but the way we lost it, and the first three goals we gave away were poor to be fair.

"I think the game plan that we worked on Tuesday and Thursday was implemented very well by the players up until they scored their first goal. They're a very good team and they score lots of goals, they don't need a helping hand to score any more and for the first three we gifted them."

He added: "When you go ahead, the next ten minutes just do your job and get us into half-time 1-0 up.

"We need to have just ten minutes of keeping the ball or getting up into their half, to relieve the pressure. In those ten minutes we could have probably seen it out until half time but we gifted them three goals."

Insisting some home truths were told following the final whistle, our interim boss was keen to insist that his players needed to now provide a reaction, as we prepare to take on Yeovil Town away from home next weekend.

"I was pretty brutal to be honest," said Nelson. "I’ve just spoken to the press there and said at the end of the day as a group and some individuals aren't good enough. The group needs help and the fact of the matter is we are now bottom of the league.

"A few home truths have to be told and now is the time. We’ll see how they react to it.

"We can't get today back, it's gone now. Nothing we do during the week or next weekend will affect this result. I'll watch the game back tomorrow and our analyst will clip the game up and we'll sit with the lads on Monday before training and put it to bed and get ready for the weekend."

Providing an injury update too, Nelson added how George Taft and Alfie Beestin will have to be monitored before our trip to Somerset next weekend.

"Tafty [George Taft] complained of a slight ankle injury at half time, however he managed to finish the game so he should be fine," he added. "Alfie [Beestin] came off with a dead leg and hopefully everyone else is okay."
