Taft: Everyone's got to prove themselves

8 November 2021

Defender George Taft spoke to iFollow Iron after his side’s 1-0 defeat against Doncaster Rovers in the Emirates FA Cup first round on Saturday.

Reflecting on the goal that decided the game, the 27-year-old said: “It was a bit of a freak goal to concede. I think we worked hard in patches and nullified them. We had a few chances ourselves but we made a few mistakes over parts of the game which I think have cost us.”

He added: “With the new gaffer coming in everyone’s got to prove themselves. Everyone’s got to learn how he wants us to play but I thought it was a positive performance in parts of the game.”

Commenting on the newly appointed first team manager Keith Hill, he said: “The gaffer has been in 24 hours and he’s set his standards for how he wants us to play; we’ve got to learn it.

"It’s a good opportunity for lads who haven't played in recent weeks to show him what they can do and force their way into the team. It’s good healthy competition for everyone. In football, it can change quickly and we’ve got to adapt and take the positives and go from there.

“He’s come in and told us how he wants us to play and training’s been good. He’s been with all the lads and got us organised and everyone’s raring to go. It’s a boost for us.”

Commenting on preparation for the next game against Rovers in the Papa John's Trophy group stages on Tuesday night, Taft said: "It's another game on Tuesday and a longer week for the manager to assess for Saturday.

“It’s another chance. I'm sure some lads will come in that didn't play on Saturday. They’ll make changes too but people have to show what they can do and try to get in the team for Saturday (against Salford City)."
