Hill speaks following Doncaster game

First team manager Keith Hill provided his reaction to iFollow Iron after his side's Papa John's Trophy game against Doncaster Rovers, which saw his side battle back from 3-0 down to lose 3-2 and see a goal disallowed at the end.

Substitutes Ryan Loft and Jake Scrimshaw both scored, with the latter seeing a late effort ruled out, as United exited the competition.

"There were a lot of positives. We certainly tested our players on Monday to the way that I work, and are trying to implement a style, and it ain't just going to happen (overnight)," said Hill.

"I've got to make I remain focused and level-headed, and some of the stuff we played tonight in possession was superb. We created chances. The goals came because we stuck to the way we wanted to play. 

"When I watched the game on Saturday, I wasn't happy with the pass percentage so we have to defend a different way. People talk about defending as tackling, blocking and heading, and it is when the opposition have the ball, but you can also defend with the ball and it's about making angles, keeping possession but not pointless possession because we want to be productive and create goalscoring opportunities.

"We have created goalscoring opportunities tonight and as a result of that have scored two late goals, and had another one chalked off. We had other opportunities too, such as Myles Hippolyte's one.

"Some of our football while possession-based was pleasing on the eye. Some of it is pointless possession but we're trying to get the players going and we have to make sure there's a methodology in place. It's something I have to stick to and I'm not overly concerned with the result and going out of the Papa John's Trophy because it's not a major concern. The damage was already done and we'd have had to win 4-0 tonight (to go through).

"I used it as a training exercise and I'm not being disrespectful to the supporters. I want them to see and buy into what we're trying to achieve with the group of players we've got. In and out of possession we have to be better, but to win games we must be better defensively when we're in possession - it's as simple as that."
