It was another trip to the Tarmac Silverlands Stadium for the Iron this afternoon for another crucial encounter in the National League North.
Usually, Scunthorpe were used to facing Buxton at this particular stadium but today they were set to face a relegation threatened Farsley Celtic, due to unfortunate circumstances with their ownership and pitch the Celts have been forced to field an outrageously young side and fulfil their home fixtures away from their rightful home of the Citadel.
With regards to the United line-up for the fixture there was to be an array of changes to the side that defeated Alfreton Town in midweek. The first two of the four changes made to Andy Butler’s side was to be a straight swap for both full-backs, this meant that the usual starting pair of Oliver Rose and Tyler Denton were allowed a rest with their replacements being Joe Starbuck and Michael Kelly. Elsewhere, there was a rare start for returning midfielder Luke Williams allowing Joe Rowley his first rest in quite some time and finally there was to be another swap on the left-flank with Mo Fadera being selected to start ahead of target man forward Mark Beck.
The game was set underway by United with a slightly bizarre feeling around the ground. Despite the circumstances there was still a large crowd of spectators in attendance with the majority of Scunthorpe fans showing up to show their support for the troubled Celts.
In the early exchanges the Iron experienced some resistance from the hosts who began the fixture with a surprising attack that caught Scunthorpe off guard. After some brave defending to clear the ball for a corner, the resulting set-piece would almost result in the first goal of the game. The deep curling cross was overstruck by the Farsley man but was somehow swept back into the box by striker Justin Iwobi, this allowed a Celtic man to hammer the ball into the into the open goal from close range. Farsley’s celebrations would be short lived however as the referee Darren Rogers signalled for a goal kick, deeming that the initial cross had gone out of play.
Immediately after this opportunity United would appear to wake up and begin their push for the opening goal. The Iron’s first chance of the game would come following some wing wizardry from Cal Roberts who calved open the Farsley defence with a pass into Kian Scales on the by line. After retrieving the ball, Scales would drive a low cross into the area that was destined to find Carlton Ubaezuonu at the back post who would have the ball cleared off his foot by makeshift defender Manny Mampala who did extremely well not to turn the ball into his own net in the process of clearing.
The next 20 minutes of action would see nothing but half chances as Scunthorpe protected the ball wisely, controlling possession in the process. This sustained period of control allowed United to wear down their opponents which would eventually open the space for the encounters first goal.
It would be Cal Roberts to open the scoring for the Iron after an outstanding set-piece that was reminiscent of Scunthorpe’s December goal of the month against King’s Lynn Town. This would see a low driven ball from Michael Clunan towards the centre of the area find the disguised run of Roberts who came steaming onto the cross, finishing the move with a clinical finish that rattled off the inside of the post.
With a 1-0 advantage now intact Butler’s side would look to build on it with a quick fire second that almost arrived courtesy of central defender Will Evans. It was Roberts who turned provider this time around as he placed a wide free-kick directly onto the head of Evans at the back post, the headed effort was superb from the defender who did everything right and would’ve surely scored if not for the tremendous intervention of goalkeeper William Brook who pushed the ball away.
From this point it wouldn’t be long before the Iron got their second as an excellent break from deep by Roberts allowed him to pick out Kian Scales’ untracked run on the far side. It was a superb dink from Roberts that released the eventual goal scorer who clipped the ball beyond the onrushing Brook and fortunately the shot had the legs to make it across the line for 2-0.
This would be the last notable action of the first half and when the teams returned for the second period Scunthorpe would make their attacking intention clear with a number of early promising attacks.
One of these previously mentioned attacks would produce another incredible save out of the Nottingham Forest loanee Brook sprung to his right to deny Carlton Ubaezuonu his fourth goal in five games. It was a bullet header from the Irishman who met Starbuck’s cross perfectly, however the shot stopper was somehow equal to the attempt.
Following this the hosts would craft a chance from seemingly nowhere as a singular long ball over the United defence fell perfectly into the path of Farsley skipper Cole Hyde who attempted to direct a well-placed volley over Ross Fitzsimons that crashed against the crossbar before making its way behind for a goal kick, much to the relief of the planted Fitzsimons.
Next up in the encounter was to be another tremendous save from Brook who confirmed his man of the match award with a tremendous diving stop to deny half-time substitute Mark Beck after the forward rose highest inside the penalty area to direct a powerful header down towards the corner.
Scunthorpe were in complete control of what was a very slow second half and barring an outrageous halfway line attempt from Celts winger Joao Silva that landed just over the crossbar the hosts never really looked like scoring in the game, something that would become fact following the full-time whistle.
As the half dragged on and the Iron drew closer and closer to another win on the road there would be one final glorious chance for Beck to make it three. But when the striker met Tyler Denton’s brilliant first-time cross he struggled to nod the ball down from a matter of yards and saw his effort soar over the target to bring an almost training match style fixture to its end in Buxton.
IRON: Fitzsimons, Kelly, Kouogun (Boyce, 70) Evans, Clunan, Roberts, Ubaezuonu (Wreh, 62), Scales (Beck, 45), Starbuck, Williams ( Rowley, 79), Fadera (Denton, 70).
Defender Michael Kelly reflects on being handed a start as the Iron continue their unbeaten run with victory at Farsley Celtic.
