Team news and pre-Sutton views from Neil Cox

20 August 2021

First team manager Neil Cox is aiming for his side to build on the two points picked up on the road in the last week as they return to home soil this weekend.

United host Sutton in the first of three home games in eight days, with the EFL newcomers searching for their first-ever victory at this level.

“It’ll be a good game for us, and Sutton are a good side,” he told iFollow Iron.

“They got promoted last season and I know them quite well, as I used to live in the area and played them a couple of times in the FA Cup. I know Matty (Gray, their manager) well. I think he’s done an unbelievable job.

“It’ll be a tough tie, they’ll be really hard to beat. They play a 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2 and they’re well organised, well drilled and we’ll have to be at our best to get something out of the game.”

The players and staff returned to prepare for the weekend’s encounter in buoyant mood after claiming a late point at Walsall in midweek, with Alfie Beestin’s late strike the least the side deserved following a positive display.

“We’ve had a couple of rest days and were back in this morning for a good training session,” he continued.

“We’ve looked at who is raring to go and who is tired, and we’ll pick a team from there.

“We’ve got a few knocks from the other night, so we’re going to have to look at them. Jai Rowe has got a bit of a sore hamstring, Pughy (Tom Pugh) has got a bit of a sore ankle. I’m sure with the good result in midweek, they’ll be fine.”

Elsewhere, it’s as you were in terms of the squad, with only new loan signing Jake Scrimshaw added to the mix ahead of the latest encounter.

While some players on the sidelines are nearing a return, all are still some way off being involved in first team action.

“A couple of the boys are back on the grass, but that’s it,” he stated.

‘They’re doing some light work. We’ll know more after the weekend just how long they’re going to be.

"We’re still unsure about Lofty (Ryan Loft) and the situation about his cheek. We’re still waiting to hear from the surgeon, so we’ll know more about him next week. We’re also waiting to hear from Coventry about Tom (Billson). He’s seeing a second specialist and we’re hoping to know more by next week too.”
