Next review: May 2027
Signed: J. Moody (General Manager)
This policy sets out Scunthorpe United Football Club’s commitment to ensuring that disabled supporters are fully supported and have equal access to all reasonable services and facilities at the stadium.
For the purposes of this policy, disability includes (but is not limited to) impairments affecting:
Mobility
Manual dexterity
Physical co-ordination
Continence
Ability to lift, carry or otherwise move everyday objects
Speech, hearing or eyesight
Ability to concentrate, learn or understand
Perception of risk or personal safety
The Club operates in accordance with the Equality Act 2010, which requires that disabled people are not treated less favourably and that reasonable adjustments are made to ensure equal access to goods, services, and facilities.
The Club encourages disabled supporters to attend matches with a Personal Assistant (PA), particularly for safety reasons, including emergency evacuation and general assistance within the stadium.
For clarity, a supporter may bring a child aged 14 or over to act as a Personal Assistant where appropriate.
All disabled supporters and their assistants are required to comply with stadium ground regulations and evacuation procedures. In the event of an emergency, instructions will be provided via the stadium public address (PA) system and by stewards.
For the purposes of this policy, a disabled supporter is defined as:
“Any person who, due to a disability or impairment, is unable to use standard stadium seating without the Club making reasonable adjustments in accordance with health and safety requirements. Such individuals may be eligible for designated accessible areas of the stadium, subject to availability and eligibility criteria.”
Under the Equality Act 2010, disabled people must not be treated less favourably because of their disability, and service providers are required to make reasonable adjustments where necessary.
Scunthorpe United Football Club is committed to meeting both the legal requirements and the spirit of the Act by ensuring accessibility, inclusion, and equality of experience for all supporters.
Supporters with hearing impairments can access information via the Club’s official website: www.scunthorpe-united.co.uk
Hearing-impaired supporters may attend matches in either designated accessible seating areas (subject to availability) or standard seating.
Where available, match information and key announcements will also be communicated via the stadium PA system and steward support.
The Ticket Office manages all enquiries from visually impaired supporters, including allocation of spaces in designated accessible viewing areas.
The Club strongly recommends that visually impaired supporters attend matches with a companion able to assist in the event of an emergency.
Matchday information will be provided via the stadium PA system.
To access designated seating, supporters may be required to provide evidence of visual impairment, such as:
Registration as blind or partially sighted, or
Confirmation from an optician or medical professional
Visually impaired supporters may also choose to sit in general seating areas if preferred.
Audio commentary headsets are regrettably not currently available at this stadium, although commentary may be available via BBC Radio Humberside, with possible provision made available on request, subject to availability.
Supporters wishing to attend with a Guide Dog should contact the Safety Officer in advance by emailing martin.hopper@scunthorpe-united.co.uk or calling our main switchboard 01724 747670 to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place. The Club will make reasonable adjustments to support the welfare of assistance animals.
The Club provides designated wheelchair spaces for supporters who require them and prioritises allocation for those unable to use standard seating.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
Be a full-time wheelchair user, or
Be unable to walk reasonable distances safely to access other seating areas
It is strongly recommended that wheelchair users attend with a Personal Assistant capable of providing support in case of emergency evacuation.
Applications should be made via the Ticket Office.
Supporters with learning difficulties may generally use standard seating areas. However, where additional support is required, the Club will make reasonable adjustments.
Support is available via the Safety Officer by emailing martin.hopper@scunthorpe-united.co.uk.
A Personal Assistant may attend free of charge where required.
The Club recognises that many supporters have mobility impairments but are not full-time wheelchair users.
These supporters may be offered seating in accessible or general seating areas depending on individual needs.
Tickets should be arranged via the Ticket Office. Standard match pricing applies, with Personal Assistants admitted free of charge where eligible.
The Club may request supporting documentation to confirm eligibility for accessible seating.
The Club also recognises the importance of family attendance and will seek to accommodate suitable seating arrangements where possible.
The Club acknowledges that elderly supporters and those with long-term health conditions may require adjusted seating or access arrangements.
Reasonable adjustments will be made wherever possible to support continued attendance.
The Club provides 24 designated disabled parking spaces in the East Car Park, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis on matchdays. Please note, these spaces are still chargeable, but can only be accessed with the use of a blue badge.
All spaces are located within approximately 50 metres of stadium access points.
There are also a limited number of spaces directly outside the Britcon Stand on the west side of the Iron Bar, and also outside the Lincolnshire Coop Family Zone entrance.
Disabled supporters may also be dropped off at:
East Stand entrance
West Stand hospitality entrance (lift access available)
Away disabled supporters may use the East Car Park on a first-come, first-served basis. Drop-off arrangements are also available near the East Stand prior to parking.
Please note, these spaces are still chargeable, but can only be accessed with the use of a blue badge.
Accessible catering facilities are available in selected areas of the stadium, including the East and South (away) stands.
Where dedicated facilities are not available, supporters are encouraged to seek assistance from the nearest steward, who will provide support where possible.
For further information, contact: martin.hopper@scunthorpe-united.co.uk.
The Club is committed to making reasonable adjustments across all departments to ensure full accessibility to services and facilities.
All staff are required to comply with equality legislation and accessibility standards.
All relevant staff receive training in disability awareness and disability etiquette. This training is ongoing and forms part of the Club’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment for all supporters.
(Refer to current season pricing information issued by the Club.)
Allocation of tickets for disabled supporters at away fixtures is dependent on availability provided by the host club and will be managed by the Ticket Office.
Information will be included on each ticketing news story where information is given to the Club. Scunthorpe United endeavours to seek out information where it is not given, to ensure supporters have access to any details required.
The Club may request supporting documentation to verify eligibility for disabled seating or concessions. Acceptable evidence may include:
Higher rate mobility or care component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
Confirmation from Local Authority Social Services
Letter from a GP or medical professional confirming disability or impairment
Eligibility is assessed based on:
A substantial and long-term adverse effect on daily living activities
A condition expected to last at least 12 months or for life
Impact on normal day-to-day activities
