Preview: Banbury United (H)

16 March 2024

Scunthorpe United return to the Attis Arena to host Banbury United on Saturday afternoon (3pm kick-off).

The Iron are back in action following their 5-0 triumph over Bishop’s Stortford to get back to winning ways seven days ago. United will be fresh and raring to kick on after the game against Spennymoor Town on Tuesday night was called off with less than an hour before kick-off.

In the reverse fixture away from home, Scunthorpe beat Banbury 2-0 with two first half goals for the Iron. Jacob Butterfield opened the scoresheet in the seventh minute and Connor Smith doubled United’s lead just six minutes before the half-time interval before a quiet second half.

IRON TEAM NEWS

With the game in midweek being called off, the Iron's two suspended players shift their bans across a game.

Liam McAlinden continues his three-match ban following his red card against Chester two weeks ago, while defender Andrew Boyce serves his one-match suspension following his sending off 10 days ago.

Kai Corbett comes into the squad following his arrival on loan from Peterborough United, and would have been included on the bench in midweek.

Elsewhere, Jason Law and Callum Roberts are both absent through injury, with Law edging towards involvement, despite a setback in the week, while Roberts is less than a month from contention.

THE OPPOSITION

The Iron's opponents sit in the relegation zone and are six points away from Darlington just above the drop zone in 20th place. Banbury are in form that explains their league position with six straight league losses and their last victory dating back to the 30th January.

Banbury United have had a clear struggle to find goals, having scored just 32 goals in the league, only Bishop’s Stortford have scored less, scoring just 31 goals this season.

Despite having a much worse home form, Banbury United’s away form is not very pretty on the eye. The Puritans have lost 50% of their away fixtures losing nine of their 18 games on the road. They have also picked up three draws, but picked up six victories.
