Callum Roberts on aiming for back-to-back away wins

12 January 2024

Previewing the weekend’s trip to Brackley Town, midfielder Callum Roberts is looking for the Iron to get back on the winning trail after dropping two points late on against Boston United last weekend.

Scunthorpe were in the ascendancy until the first minute of additional time last weekend when they were pegged back in a result which ended an eight home league game winning run.

“It’s never nice conceding a late goal, and it was two points dropped for us,” he said.

“We played really well in the first half, probably the best we’ve played in my opinion going forward. We came away from that in the second half and stopped doing the things well. Ultimately it lead to us conceding.

“I feel like I’m getting there now. I just need to keep getting on the ball as much as I can now, and the goals and assists will happen.”

After a sustained length of time on the sidelines, Roberts was the subject of an accident in training which saw him miss out for one week, but since he’s been back firing, and feels he’s reaching somewhere near his best.

“It was a silly one in training, but it’s fine now and good to be back,” he continued.

“It’s tough after games. I feel sluggish afterwards, but I’m recovering well through the week and ready to go again. It’s been nice to get a run in the team and to be back playing football regularly. It’s nice being up there, we just have to keep it going.”

Having dropped points last weekend, Roberts is eager that United make it back-to-back away wins, and a fourth game on the road without defeat.

“It’s another massive game for us,” he stated.

“Every game we have to win. We were speaking about it this morning. At the minute, it’s out of our hands. We’ve just got to keep winning, and keep playing well. Three points is massive for us.

“There’s something for us to get. It’s nice being out in front, and I’d rather be in that position, but it’s going to be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks. We’ve got a hard few games, and they’ve got a hard few games too, so it can always chop and change again.”

The Iron’s next home game welcomes table-topping Tamworth to the Attis Arena, but the former Aberdeen winger states it’s one game at a time, in terms of the squads’ focus.

“It’s one game at a time really. We have to focus on the game this weekend and try to get three points, and once that’s happened, we will focus on Tamworth and then Darlington. Every game is an opportunity for three points,” he added.

“It’s a hard run we’ve got. We had a tough run over Christmas on some tough pitches. We’ve come out with three points throughout that period. It wasn’t ideal dropping points last Saturday, but it’s another game unbeaten. We’ve got to keep that momentum going really.”
