Preview: Alfreton Town (H)

24 February 2024

The Iron return to the Attis Arena on Saturday, hosting play-off hopefuls Alfreton Town (3pm kick-off).

Looking to react following a 2-1 defeat at South Shields in midweek, the Iron are winless in four, with two draws and two defeats.

On Tyneside on Tuesday night, Scunthorpe went 1-0 down as Dylan Stephenson scored for the hosts just after the second half commenced. Dion Sembie-Ferris bagged an equaliser with 20 minutes to play. Dylan Stephenson was at the double as he got the winner with just 10 minutes of action left, while Tyler Denton was controversially denied an equaliser late on following an offside, despite Flynn Clarke being the player in the offside position.

In the reverse fixture at Alfreton, no side came out on top. United received an early red card as Kian Scales in a decision that ultimately changed the game for the Iron. Danny Whitehall got the opener with a stunning free-kick just past the half hour mark. Dwayne Wiley netted an equaliser just five minutes after Whitehall’s strike, and then just five minutes after that Danny Elliot put the Iron in front, 2-1 up going into half time.

The last goal of the game came 11 minutes into the second half as Josh Clackstone rescued a point for Alfreton.

The Iron will need to focus on their game, firstly keeping out a very deadly attack but also kicking on ourselves and getting a few goals to get back to winning ways. Dion Sembie-Ferris has personally been in good form despite the teams struggle for victories he has been a key player since being recalled from a successful loan at Peterborough Sports the club the Iron bought him from.

IRON TEAM NEWS

Liam McAlinden continues to make a positive impact following two consecutive starts since joining the club, and will be in line to be handed his home debut on Saturday.

Both other arrivals Dylan Youmbi and Flynn Clarke have both made their debuts for the Iron from the bench.

Elsewhere, Jason Law and Callum Roberts are both absent through injury.

THE OPPOSITION

The Reds have scored joint fourth most goals this season having scored 56 goals this season and have multiple goal threats, one of which being Liam Waldock.

Liam came through the Sheffield Wednesday youth and endured a loan spell at local side Gainsborough Trinity and then signed permanently for the Holy Blues, where he eventually left after missing out on promotion last year. Since moving in the summer to Alfreton he has got nine goals and two assists from midfield in 29 appearances, and been a threat at just 23 years of age.

Another key player for Alfreton is Lewis Salmon, at just 22 years of age the centre forward joined Alfreton back on a permanent transfer this summer and was on loan at the club in the 2021-22 season. Now he has been reunited with Town as he will be looking to achieve his side’s promotion dreams. Salmon has scored eight goals in 23 and has been a fan favourite.

Alfreton’s top scorer, however, is 31-year-old centre-forward Jordan Thwelis. Jordan has bagged his side 12 goals in his 24 appearances. Thewlis came through the Iron's youth side in 2011, before leaving for Gainsborough Trinity in the January transfer window for the 2011-12 season.

Alfreton have another ex-Iron attacker in Gerry McDonagh. Gerry spent just over a month at the Iron before leaving permanently to Eastleigh. He now finds himself at Town after joining towards the end of this January’s window. Having played just six games, McDonagh has scored two goals already for Alfreton and he is a part of a deadly Alfreton attack that loves to share all the goals out.
