Michael Clunan looking ahead to his Iron league debut

4 August 2023

Midfielder Michael Clunan is looking ahead to his potential Iron debut when the side travel to face Tamworth in their league opener on Saturday.

The 29-year-old was named skipper officially on Friday ahead of the fixture, with the former King's Lynn player speaking to the media ahead of the game against the Lambs.

When reflecting on pre-season he stated: “It was a slow start to be honest but that was to be expected with all the new faces coming in. It takes a few weeks to get your fitness back and to get the lads gelling together but from then on its been great.

"We’ve put on some great performances including those against EFL clubs in which we have been very organised. We have created a very good work ethic within the team which has showed against the teams we’ve had come to Glanford Park so far."

When asked on his thoughts heading into this weekend encounter against Tamworth he replied: "They are riding the crest of a wave right now and have some good momentum behind them, but we’ve studied them we know both their strengths and weaknesses but we’re ready for it."

With Tamworth playing on a 3G pitch, Clunan gave his thoughts on what the surface can be like: "It depends on the weather sometimes when it comes to a 3G pitch.

"If it's wet, it can be a bit zippy but it can also be sticky as well, but it’s going to be the same for both teams and there are lads here with a lot of experience and we know what to expect so hopefully it shouldn’t play a factor in the result."

The newly christened captain also had this to say on the competition for places within the squad: "It’s a good headache to have for the gaffer, both him and the owner have assembled a great squad, with great depth."

Finally when asked on how he’s adapting to life at the Iron after his arrival from Kings Lynn, he added: "The transitions has been fine with both clubs being full time and all the players and staff have been great and really welcoming which has helped me settle in."
