Beestin feeling better as Iron prepare for Gateshead

25 October 2022

Alfie Beestin has reflected on the season so far and looked ahead to Tuesday night's game against Gateshead in the National League.

The midfielder missed the Iron’s defeat to Southend United at the weekend through illness, and said: “I’m feeling a lot better now. It was frustrating, having travelled down, to not be able to play. I needed to think of the team before myself though, and I knew I wasn’t 100 per cent so I didn’t want to play and not produce my best performance.

“I wasn’t feeling the best throughout the week, and then on Friday and Saturday I was coughing a lot. In Friday's training session I was struggling to catch my breath and on Saturday I still hadn’t recovered. Like I said, I didn’t want to go out there and put in a poor performance that would look bad on me and the team.“

Alfie still watched the game against Southend from the sidelines, and said: “It was frustrating to watch. It’s good that we’ve got a game on Tuesday to put it right though and try and get three points.”

He continued to talk about the short turnover between games, adding: “We have a game Tuesday, Friday, and then again next Tuesday. It’s a good chance to put on a good run and get as many points as we can.

“We’re going to take every game as it comes and just focus on the win. The focus is on Tuesday night and getting those three points for us and the fans. After Gateshead we’ll move onto Barnet and trying to get three points there as well.”

Alfie went on to reflect on his own performances this season, adding: “I feel like I’ve been putting in better performances, but I know myself that I should be scoring more goals and providing more assists. I’m my own biggest critic, and I’m going to do my best to score as many as I can and try and help the team.”

After this he went on to talk about his missed chance in the last home game against Aldershot. He said: “That was my own fault. I misjudged it and it didn’t bounce right for me, but really I should have just thrown my body at it. I’ll look to put it right on Tuesday and try to get a goal for the team.”

Finally, on Tuesday's challenge, he said: “I’m feeling a lot better now so I’m rearing to go for Tuesday. If I’m picked then I’ll give 100 per cent like I always do.”
