Flashback: Bristol Rovers

4 May 2022

As we get ready to visit Bristol Rovers on Saturday, we take a look at three memorable games and the full record versus the Pirates.

THE LAST WIN OVER THE PIRATES
Bristol Rovers 1-2 Iron
Saturday, November 17th, 2018

Matthew Lund netted a 78th-minute winner to give Scunthorpe victory at fellow League One strugglers Bristol Rovers.

The former Rovers loanee burst into the box to net with the aid of a deflection that sent his shot looping over the head of goalkeeper Jack Bonham.

Two minutes earlier Scunthorpe goalkeeper Jak Alnwick capped a superb display by diving to his right to keep out a Chris Lines penalty following a foul on Stefan Payne.

The visitors took a 15th-minute lead when Rovers switched off claiming offside as a chip was played into their box and Lee Novak shot home from close range.

The equaliser came during four minutes of first-half stoppage time, added for an injury to Scunthorpe's Ryan Colclough. Liam Sercombe drilled a right-footed shot past Alnwick from 15 yards following Tom Nichols' cross from the right.

Rovers hit the crossbar in the first half through a Kyle Bennett shot. Nichols and Bennett failed to beat Alnwick one-on-one and the Scunthorpe keeper made an outstanding diving save to deny Sercombe.

IRON START 2016-17 SEASON IN STYLE
Iron 3-1 Bristol Rovers
Saturday, August 6th, 2016

Brilliant second-half goals from Kevin van Veen and Josh Morris helped Scunthorpe come from behind to beat newly-promoted Bristol Rovers 3-1 on the opening day of the League One campaign.

Matty Taylor had given Rovers a first-half lead but Dutch striker Van Veen equalised in the 66th minute with a flashing drive from a tight angle that flew past goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall after the visitors had failed to clear a corner.

And nine minutes from time summer signing Morris popped up with the winner, cracking a blistering shot on the run from just outside the box past a stunned Mildenhall.

It was a real kick in the teeth for hard-working Rovers who had looked comfortable and composed for the opening hour.

They took the lead in the 31st minute from their first chance of the game through last season's 28-goal leading marksman Taylor, who controlled a ball into the box from Chris Lines to sweep an effort past keeper Luke Daniels from 10 yards.

But the visitors could not add to their advantage before cracking under increasing pressure in the second half as Scunthorpe hit back in style.

Substitute Kyle Wootton added the gloss in stoppage time when he broke clear to steer a shot past Mildenhall from the edge of the box.

BIG WIN IN FINAL HOME GAME OF 2004-05 PROMOTION SEASON
Iron 4-0 Bristol Rovers
Saturday, April 30th, 2005

Scunthorpe boosted their promotion hopes with a superb win against Bristol Rovers On This Day in 2005.

Steve Torpey's glancing header after eight minutes broke the deadlock and he scored another similarly soon after.

Paul Hayes lobbed over Ryan Clarke for his 20th of the season before Disley received his second booking.

Towards the end of the match, Cleveland Taylor took advantage of Rovers' failure to clear when he looped a header into the top corner.

Promotion from League Two was secured at Shrewsbury a week later.
