Report: Iron 0-1 Oldham Athletic

5 February 2022

Scunthorpe suffered a home defeat to Oldham Athletic as they were beaten 1-0 by a late Junior Luamba strike at the Sands Venue Stadium.

fter 10 minutes, the away side had the first chance of the game after Temitope Obadeyi picked up the ball on the edge of the area and swung a left-footed strike at goal which narrowly went wide.

Minutes later, Liam Feeney whipped a low cross into the box from a free-kick on the edge of the box from the left-wing but it was cleared away by the Oldham defence.

With 15 minutes of the first half left to play, Joe Nuttall chested a flying ball and flicked it over the back-line of the defence to play through Tyrese Sinclair but the whistle blew as he was in an offside position.

On the stroke of half-time, Sinclair beautifully chested the ball which dropped down perfectly for him to volley it from the edge of the area, almost catching goalkeeper Daniel Rogers off-guard as he had to jump and parry it away from goal.

Six minutes into the second-half, Rekeil Pyke stormed down the right-wing beating and getting behind the Oldham defence as he pulled the ball back and drove it into the box to Nuttall, who couldn’t get enough bend on the ball as it went over the bar and out for a goal-kick.

Minutes later, Oldham’s Christopher Missilou tried an audacious over-head kick from the edge of the box which missed the goal and went wide for a goal-kick.

Midway through the second half, Alfie Beestin found a pocket of space in Oldham’s final third and picked out a rampant Harry Bunn who made a darting run in behind the defence but he was ruled to be offside.

With 10 minutes left to play, Missilou wildly launched a shot at goal which was deflected and out for a corner.

From the ensuing corner, Oldham took the lead against Scunthorpe after it bobbled around in the box and Luamba fired the ball into the back of the net to give the away side the advantage.

Substitute Tom Pugh had a wonderful chance at goal in the dying embers of the game after taking on an Oldham defender and shooting on site, but could only find the side netting.
