The Iron began the 2013-14 season with a 2-0 victory over Mansfield Town, who were newly promoted from the Conference.

With a number of debutants in the side, it was Terry Hawkridge who impressed and got involved in both goals in the first half. Matt Sparrow got on the end of one cross to fire home on the half volley before a forward ball sent fellow debutant Sam Winnall through, beating the 'keeper to the ball before slotting into an empty net.

Eddie Nolan saw red in stoppage time at the end of the game for his second booking, also conceding a penalty which was fired over the crossbar.
