When the fixtures came out ahead of the 1954/55 season, the majority of supporters will have been looking forward to the second fixture more than the first.

The Iron travelled to Blundell Park to compete in an early local derby in which three-to-four thousand Scunthorpe supporters commuted for the game to see their side tear apart the Mariners in front of a total crowd of over 20,000.

It was the hosts who went ahead after 12 minutes though, with McGill's shot restoring parity before the interval.

The second half belonged to United with goals from Gregory, Brown and Jones.
