Boyce: Three sloppy goals cost us

15 August 2022

Defender Andrew Boyce spoke to Iron Player after his side's 3-2 away defeat to Maidenhead United at the weekend.

"Three sloppy goals cost us," he started. “We can’t give away sloppy goals like that, we’ve got to defend the middle of the goal better.

"I’ll hold my hand up, I wasn’t good enough and lost my man for the first goal, and it was just really sloppy. At any level you can’t give goals away and we’ve waited until we were 3-0 down before we’ve had a reaction. Having said that, I don’t think we played badly first half, I thought we had some good chances, they’ve had three chances and taken all three so that’s what’s disappointing really.

"The first two goals were very similar and even the third, I know it’s a corner but it’s across the front stick - you can't give goals away like that. The gaffer has let us know about it and we know ourselves that it’s got to be better."

Talking about the Iron’s second half in which forward Joe Nuttall bagged a brace, Boyce stated: “I thought we should've got something out of the game.

“I thought we had some good chances first half and some really good chances second half and then we got the two goals back, but I thought we could've got something out of the game.

“I’m happy for Joe (Nuttall). I know he will score a lot of goals at this level because he’s too good a player not to, so I'm pleased for him. Obviously, he’ll be disappointed we lost the game but he scored two goals so there will be a little bit of happiness there as well."

Looking ahead to Woking on Tuesday night, Boyce said: “It’ll be a similar game (in terms of the challenge). Like I say, if you give people a sniff, they’ll take it so we’ve got to be on it, we’ve got to come back down here and want to take three points home."

Finally, relating on his experience since re-joining the club and the goal he scored against Yeovil Town, Boyce remarked: “I was over the moon last week, obviously I've gone from a massive high to a bit of a low this weekend but I’m buzzing to be back.

“I’m enjoying it, I think we’ve got a great bunch and it was disappointing on Saturday but we’ll hopefully bounce back on Tuesday.

“The gaffer knows that I should have scored on Saturday. I've put one just past the post which I should've scored. Like I said we had enough chances to win the game."
