Alfie Beestin scored a superb early winner as the Iron chalked up a third straight League Two victory away at Colchester earlier this calendar year.
Scunthorpe went close in the third minute when Devarn Green ran at the Colchester defence before firing a shot straight at keeper Dean Gerken.
But the Iron took a fifth-minute lead through Beestin, who collected Ryan Loft's assist and ran at the backtracking U's defence before planting a fine shot past the motionless Gerken from more than 20 yards.
Scunthorpe keeper Mark Howard saved Callum Harriott's long-range effort soon after.
Colchester had a penalty appeal early in the second half when Courtney Senior went down under Manny Onariase's challenge in the area, while Harriott's swerving shot was parried by keeper Mark Howard.

The Iron began life after parting company with manager Mark Robins by beating struggling Colchester 3-0 at home.
The U's started well but Chris Porter and George Moncur missed the target.
The Iron, bouncing back from a 5-0 loss at Blackpool the previous week, opened the scoring when Tom Hopper steered home a low left-wing cross from Conor Townsend.
Neal Bishop crossed in for Paddy Madden to pounce from close range, before Madden scored the hosts' third goal in eight minutes with a low angled shot.

Paul Hayes hit a stunning goal to sink Colchester as Scunthorpe secured their first away victory of the season during the 2007-08 Championship campaign.
Colchester were denied a penalty in the first half when Mark Yeates was felled in the area.
They then went behind on 41 minutes when Hayes took a high ball on the edge of the box, flicked it with his left foot and volleyed home with his right.
Colchester could have equalised in the 62nd minute but Johnnie Jackson hit his shot straight at Joe Murphy.
