Neil Cox: Alex is a leader, demands and wants to win

18 June 2021

First team manager Neil Cox has provided his reaction to the signing of experienced midfielder Alex Kenyon.

The 28-year-old joins after leaving Morecambe, who won promotion from League Two last season, and has made over 300 senior appearances already in his career.

Cox said: "I'm absolutely over the moon. He's someone I've liked for a long time and we tried to bring him in during January.

"We've been working hard to get him in and I'm glad it's done, and he's signed. When we finally got the news he was leaving Morecambe, that helped move things on. He's of course been involved in the play-offs and it's a busy period of his life as he gets married next week too.

"We've had a good chat about what we expect and what we want. I was impressed with the way he came across."

Talking about his style of play, Cox continued: "He's an aggressive midfield player, who likes to win the ball back, keep the ball and get things ticking over. He's a leader and demands from others around him, and wants to get stuck in and work hard on the pitch and training pitch.

"He pushes to get the maximum from himself, and also those around him. That's what we need to bring in at this football club - characters who will roll their sleeves up and give it a right good go. He does that but is also a good footballer and has plenty of experience.

"We have some good youngsters coming through but we need him and others like him in the building to provide their class and the calmness that comes from playing many league games.

"He's a lovely person off the pitch, but we'll see a different side on the pitch and the training ground. He demands, wants to win and will help organise the dressing room and make sure people do the right things all week as we prepare properly to try and get the results.

"When I knew he was available, we hit it off really well and he's looking forward to a new challenge."
