Lewis Thompson becomes latest summer signing

16 July 2021

Scunthorpe United is delighted to have completed the signing of full-back Lewis Thompson following his departure from Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

The 21-year-old pens a one-year deal to become our latest summer addition, with the move subject to league ratification.

Thompson joined Rovers from Manchester United’s academy in the summer of 2016. He quickly settled into life at Ewood Park, impressing for their Under-18s in his first season. These showings resulted in him ending the campaign with Rovers’ development squad, where he played a handful of matches.

Further progression in the second year of the defender’s scholarship was rewarded with a first professional deal in March 2018. His first season as a professional saw him experience senior football for the first time during a three-month loan spell at FC United of Manchester.

After returning to Blackburn the full-back, who’s been capped by both England and Northern Ireland at youth level, excelled for the club’s Under-23s over the last two seasons, during which there was also a loan stint at Fylde which was cut short by that season being curtailed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

First team manager Neil Cox told iFollow Iron: "We know he's a good player. We did really well to get him in the building to have a look at him, and we've seen enough.

"He's an attacking full-back who can get forward, but also does the defending elements right. He can play a number of positions, including left midfield, as well. It's another body in that can help push everyone on.

"He has a really good personality and a winning mentality. He just wants to play first team football. He had offers from elsewhere, but when we gave him the chance to train with us he jumped at it. I'm glad it's sorted now.

"It's competition for places and I need that all over the pitch. We've started that with reinforcing the defensive areas and are now looking at the attacking/forward positions."
