Forward Ryan Loft scored and aided the side to a 3-0 win against Grimsby Town in the local derby on Saturday.

The 23-year-old, who put in a performance which was acclaimed by the media and opposition manager Paul Hurst, put the Iron ahead in the first half as he scored his second goal for the club. The other two goals were scored by Abo Eisa.

Speaking about the game to iFollow Iron, he said: “Over the last few weeks we’ve not been the best. There’s no better game to put that right than today against our local rivals in the style we did it, it was a massive boost going forward.”

When playing against the Mariners away, United lost 1-0, and Loft explained: “We just didn't perform at their place and we came away hurt that we lost and in the way we did. I think today showed the class we have.

“We put three past them today so we got back at what they did to us. Overall, there was a better team performance and now we’ve got to carry that onto the next games.”

Talking about the goals scored, he said: “I kept saying to Eisa 'just hit the target' and then he goes and does that putting the free-kick right into the top corner. That set the tone for the game. Then after that I think the nerves settled down and we imposed our style on them, and we got the other two goals.

“I've probably lacked luck (up to Saturday). I think I’ve not been in the right areas at some times. But today I tried to be in the right area, goals like that aren’t spectacular goals but every one counts."

Looking to take the positives from the game, he said: “There’s no better game to take confidence from. Especially scoring three goals, and it’s given us massive confidence going forward into the next games. As I just said in there to the players, it means nothing if we don’t carry it on. It’s a good win today. We now need to get a run going and we’ll be fine.

“(George) Taft and Manny (Onariase) were solid at the back, everything that went into our box they dealt with. The way we’ve been losing in the last couple of games is not by massive quality, it has probably been a bit of sloppy defending and the forwards can take a bit of stick for it because we’ve not been scoring to help the defenders out. Today we showed when the defenders block and we score at the other end, we’re a good side.”

Loft, who nearly signed for Grimsby before coming to United last summer, continued: “I was very poor in the last game against Grimsby. I think I made the right choice as we’ve got a good side here. I enjoy playing and it’s even better when we get wins.”

Looking towards the next game against Port Vale at home on Tuesday, the striker said: “It will be a big game, if we play like we did today it will help us. Going forward, we need to get a good run going."
