United fought hard against Barrow last Saturday at the Progression Solicitors Stadium but lost after a second-half goal.

Speaking to iFollow Iron about the upcoming derby, he said: "It’s a game which we need to win. We are well aware of the position we are in at the minute and the position that Grimsby’s in.

“It’s a massive game for both sides. But we just need to make sure that we can come out of the match with three points.”

Gilliead reflecting on the fixture against Barrow, he said: “We’ve had a look back at it and seen where we need to improve and there are a lot of areas, but the key ones are work rate and passion.

“Leaving everything out there and doing anything to get the three points. There’s no better game to do it in than this game this weekend.”

He added: “We just need to get back to the ways of when we played Harrogate and Port Vale away. We know that we can do it, but we just need to put a run together and get ourselves out of the position that we are in.”

Mentioning the game against Grimsby away in December when United lost 1-0, the midfielder said: “We were all disappointed, as the fans were. It was a big game and it was kind of a non-event. They scored a scrappy goal and then we didn’t do much at all.

“We’ve got to make sure we can create chances and put ourselves about on Saturday. Just have a right go and give the fans something to cheer about.”

He added: “We need to create more chances and score more goals. We all know that and it’s something that we have been working on this week in training and trying to emphasise putting the ball in the back of the net. Hopefully that comes through on Saturday.

“They’re coming to our pitch and our stadium and we can’t give them any time on the ball and must make sure we get amongst them."

Gilliead concluded: “We’re better defensively as a team, but the individual mistakes have been costing us. When it gets into the latter stages of the games, people do make mistakes and we need to try and make the opposition make mistakes. We’ve just got to try and turn the results around, get as many wins as possible and try to get up the league."
