Thompson looking to be on the front foot

10 August 2021

Defender Lewis Thompson is confident the side can bounce back quickly from Saturday’s result, as they look to make it into the second round of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 2017.

One of the Scunthorpe debutants at the weekend, the 21-year-old first reflected on the opening day defeat, speaking to iFollow Iron: “Obviously it was disappointing.

“Having watched it back, the first half was quite an even game. In the second half, we made a few mistakes which led to goals and it cost us the game ultimately.

“The most disappointing thing for us is we know that we’re capable of a lot better. We’ve worked on things in training and we know we are capable of doing things differently than what we did on Saturday.”

The match represented a first competitive match in front of fans at the Sands Venue Stadium for 518 days, something the squad are embracing this season.

“It was great having fans back in,” he continued.

“It was a really good turnout and a great atmosphere as well. A few lads were making their debuts, myself included, so it was a little bit different for a few of the lads. It’s something some of the lads need to get used to and I’m confident we will get used to.”

Thompson insists United must use the cup game as a springboard to build momentum in the league this month, with victory against a fellow League Two side not only putting the Iron into the next round, but also providing a boost ahead of Saturday’s encounter at Rochdale.

“The Barrow game is a great opportunity to get a win, get some confidence and momentum going into the league on Saturday,” he stated.

“It’s a cup game and the league is probably the biggest priority for us, but you want to win every game you’re involved in, whether it’s league, cup, or a friendly.

“If we win, it’ll breed confidence. The game is a good chance for us to work on things that we didn’t do too well on Saturday. It’s another League Two team, so it’s another chance to gauge where we are at early in the season. We will be playing Barrow three times at least this season, so it’s a chance to get something over them early on.

“We’ve got to take the same positive attitude into the game, start the game and be on the front foot. Hopefully we can do that.”
