Craig Hicks to referee Walsall away clash

17 August 2021

Craig Hicks has been appointed to take charge of the Iron's away league encounter against Walsall on Tuesday.

The Surrey-based official will travel to the Banks's Stadium for his third game of the season and his in Sky Bet League Two. This is his fifth season as an EFL referee, with the 2017-18 campaign his first.

Hicks began his season at Ipswich Town as they shared the spoils with newly promoted Morecambe in a four-goal thriller. Five cautions were issued on the day. His latest encounter was in the Carabao Cup overseeing Luton Town against Queens Park Rangers, which finished 1-1 at Kenilworth Road. The away side won on penalties with two cautions shown.

Hicks has taken charge of four previous Iron fixtures, the last coming at the end of last season away at Newport County. His previous appointment involving Scunthorpe saw the side topple the then league leaders Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium. Across the four games, he's issued 10 yellow cards and one red.

Meanwhile, he's refereed Walsall on three past occasions. The last came against Southend United last November, while the one before came two years prior. Both involved a red card, one of which going to a Saddlers player. Across the three games, seven cautions and two dismissals have been issued.

Last season saw him show 95 yellow cards and two reds in 34 matches.

On Tuesday, Nield will be assisted by Steven Plane and Anthony Moore, while Billy Smallwood has been appointed as the fourth official.
