McArdle: Important to get that winning feeling

4 September 2019

Rory McArdle spoke to iFollow Iron, following United’s 2-1 victory over rivals Grimsby Town at Blundell Park in the Trophy group stages.

The Iron centre-back was delighted with the first victory of the season and hopes it can act as a catalyst.

He said: “It’s always nice to get the win. We’ve been struggling to get over the line in games, so first and foremost it was about winning the game. It was important to build our confidence and get that winning feeling.”

With hopes of securing results similar to the 2-1 win against Grimsby in the league, McArdle had this to say: “That’s obviously the plan of where we want to go from here. It’s not easy sometimes when there’s not much in the game, you’re playing alright but ultimately not coming away with anything.

“Sometimes you just need that one win to spark your confidence, winning mentality and the know-how that you need to get over the line (in future games).”

On the topic of facing local rivals Grimsby Town adding an extra incentive to win the game, the centre-back said: “It’s a local derby, and it’s always nice to come out on top in these sorts of games. Whether it’s Grimsby Town or anyone else in the competition, it’s about winning the game regardless. It’s always an added bonus though (beating Grimsby).”

When asked about what he wants from the Trophy, McArdle stated: “Sometimes these sort of competitions are disregarded a little bit. Listen, it’s a game of football at the end of the day, whether it’s a pre-season friendly, game or a league game, we want to win.

“If it means tonight gives us that spark to go on a decent run, so be it, we’ve just got to take every game as it comes, and regardless of the competition we’ll do out utmost to win it.”
