Scunthorpe Rugby Union FC Appeal

20 November 2019

The Iron will be supporting Scunthorpe RUFC this Saturday by holding a bucket collection ahead of the Port Vale fixture, following the death of local rugby player, James Walker. Iron fans are encouraged to donate generously to the local cause.

Colin Chapman form Scunthorpe RUFC provides further details.

On Friday November, 1st, the night before we were set to play our National Two fixture away at Chester, our team mate James Walker, tragically took his own life. It’s the news none of us expected the next morning, getting ready to enjoy the Rugby World Cup Final before setting off for our big match. Hearing the news, the whole club felt numb.

Over the course of the few days after Jimmy’s passing, there was a real determination from his team mates to make sure we do our best to do something positive in Jimmy’s name and raise as much awareness and funds as possible to help men struggling with the same issues that Jimmy faced.

This is where we decided to team up with local charity “One for the Lads” that has been set up to help men struggling with mental health issues in the local area. Short term the first team squad are growing “mo’s” to raises funds individually. As a club, we will be also holding a number of events over the course of the season to keep spreading our message and reach our ambitious target of £50,000.

The rugby community has overwhelmed us with their support. Rivals on the pitch, but off it outstanding! It’s not only been the financial support clubs near and far have offered, the message they have helped spread and events being held to raise awareness about this issue has been fantastic. From famous faces to teams from other sports, our message & support for the story of Jimmy has really been fantastic.

We have currently raised over £7000 in the first week of setting up our fundraising and we as a club won’t stop till we hit that £50,000 and help people like Jimmy get the support they need!
