Andy Butler looking to help bring the good times back to Scunthorpe

24 May 2019

Defender Andy Butler is excited to rejoin the Iron after an 11-year absence and can’t wait to return for pre-season training at the end of June.

The 35-year-old signs after departing in 2008, having made over 150 appearances and scored 15 goals during his first stint at the club.

Since then, he’s made over 600 total career appearances and scored more than 50 goals, and will add vast experience to the United ranks.

“It’s a new chapter in my career,” he told iFollow Iron.

“It’s good to be back. It’s been 11 years since I was last here, and I’m looking forward to getting started.

“In terms of infrastructure, it’s changed. The ground’s very familiar though and I had some good times here. Hopefully we can replicate them.”

He becomes the first addition of new manager Paul Hurst’s reign and added: “The gaffer is big on characters and experience, so hopefully I bring that. Fans know how I like to be – no-nonsense, but at the same time I can play.

“They told me about the positive way they want to play. They want to get the club back on the up again and start strongly.

“I expect to push in any team I play in. I had some good years here when I was younger and the aim is to bring the good times back to Scunthorpe. That’s what we’re aiming to do this year.”

Butler was part of the Doncaster side that reached the League One play-offs in the season just gone, with last season only ending last Friday for him.

He continued: “I only finished then but I’m bored already! I’ve started my running already and I love keeping fit. I don’t bring my age into anything because I feel fitter than I’ve ever had – maybe even when I was younger.”

He concluded: “I’ve always kept an eye out on the club, wherever I’ve gone. I see the old faces, such as Stanno (Kit Man Nathan Stanton) and Graham (Colby), the groundsman. I always followed the results and it was sad to see them relegated.

“Sometimes you have to break it down and build back up again. We did a few years ago and that’s what we’ll be aiming to do this year.”
