Tom Pugh signs first professional contract

13 March 2019

Scunthorpe United can announce trainee central midfielder Tom Pugh has signed his first professional contract with the club.

Pugh joined the Iron in February 2017 at Under-16 level after departing Leeds United. He then penned a two-year scholarship in May 2017, becoming a prominent fixture in the youth team, captaining the side in his second year.

The 18-year-old made his senior debut in United’s Checkatrade Trophy game against Mansfield Town back in November 2018 as an 86th minute substitute and also featured for the first team throughout pre-season, including on the tour to Austria.

In December, the midfielder was also named amongst 11 young footballers to have been recognised by League Football Education (LFE). ‘The 11’ acknowledges the football and academic progress of Under-18 players on apprenticeships at current or former EFL clubs - and is also designed to assess other factors, including involvement in community or charity-based initiatives.

Academy manager Tony Daws said: “I’m absolutely delighted for Tom, his family and for the academy as well. He has a great attitude and is a fantastic lad and he has worked really hard during his scholarship with us. Over that time, he has really progressed as a footballer. He’s earned the opportunity he’s now been given and it gives him a chance to move into the Under-23 surroundings to continue his development.

“For us as an academy, it’s great news and I’d like to thank all the full-time and part-time staff, as every single coach has had input into his development.”
