Report: Iron U18s 1-2 Blackpool U18s

6 November 2018

The Iron’s Under-18 side exited the FA Youth Cup at the second round stage, as Blackpool ran out 2-1 winners at Glanford Park after extra time on Tuesday night.

Nathan Shaw opened the scoring for the Seasiders but Scunthorpe soon levelled through Harry Jessop.

Sean Graham scored the winner during the second-half of extra time though in what was an even contest throughout.

There was an early corner for the visitors as Harry Baker tracked his man as he surged down the left, sliding in just as the player looked to cross. From the resulting corner, Thomas Williams rose highest, but couldn’t direct his header on target.

Graham then had an attempt with a speculative effort from 25 yards with four minutes on the clock, but it went wide of the goal.

Nine minutes into the game, there was a great chance for the Iron to take the lead. Miracle Okafor won a free-kick on the left, with Tom Pugh sending in a brilliant cross for the striker, who won the header and beat the ‘keeper, but the ball cannoned off the bar.

The visitors then went up the other end and had a good opportunity themselves. Ewan Bange worked into space inside the box and saw his shot deflected behind for a corner.

The away side took the lead on 18 minutes when Shaw received the ball on the edge of the 18-yard box and drilled his effort beyond Iron shotstopper Sam Riches, who managed to get a hand to the effort but couldn’t keep it out.

In the 22nd minute, there was almost a chance for the Iron as Collins chased down a back pass and charged down ‘keeper Harvey Simson’s clearance. The ball went down the left channel to Okafor, but he couldn’t work the ball into space to cross.

With 26 minutes on the clock, the lead could have been extended when Bange got on the end of a right-wing cross by Graham, but he sent his header wide.

In the 31st minute, Sam Riches was forced into a decent save as he beat away a low effort from Shaw. The follow-up effort, following a half-cleared cross, was fired wide.

The Iron attacked and tried to find a way back into the game. Firstly, a Baker cross was headed goalwards but tipped onto the crossbar by Blackpool custodian Simson. Then, from the resulting corner, Levi Gallimore struck a fierce effort over the crossbar.

United managed to level the scores on 36 minutes as Jessop struck home from the left side of the area following a scramble in the penalty area after a cross came in from the right and the visitors failed to clear their lines.

The away side probed forward as they looked to regain their lead, with Shaw striking an effort over the crossbar from 25 yards three minutes after the Scunthorpe goal.

However, Scunthorpe could have made it two themselves on 41 minutes as Louis Collins saw a close range effort blocked away by Simson. Then Jessop came in for the rebound but his attempt was also tipped out by the Blackpool goalkeeper and cleared to safety.

The visitors had a chance just on the stroke of half-time as Bange connected with a Graham cross but glanced his header wide of the goal from 12 yards.

The Iron had the first chance of the second period on 47 minutes, as they were allowed to advance forward with Jessop from halfway. He was left unchallenged as he approached 20 yards from goal and saw his effort go narrowly over the crossbar.

On 60 minutes, a neat first touch around the corner from Pugh put the youth team skipper in decent space down the left flank. He drove into that space and rolled the ball across the box to Gallimore who controlled and shot, seeing his effort blocked.

The visitors had a chance one minute later when a forward pass was flicked into the path of substitute Hayden Ravenscroft, who controlled well with his first touch but sent the effort wide with Riches advancing. They then had a penalty shout denied when one of their frontman went down in the area shortly after.

Scunthorpe then went on the attack themselves and Jessop hooked an effort over the crossbar with 20 minutes remaining, as he hit a speculative effort from the edge of the area.

Will McGladdery struck an effort over for the visiting side, while Riches got his finger tips to an attempt from Bange from the edge of the area.

Five minutes later, Okafor received the ball on the edge of the 18-yard box and cut inside before firing an effort goalwards which Simson almost fumbled but managed to catch at the second attempt.

Shortly after, with Blackpool failing to clear their lines and United battling to keep to press through Okafor and Collins, the ball fell to Raynner Silva on the edge of the area, but his low drive went just wide of the post.

The next chance went the way of Blackpool with five minutes remaining, as Thomas Williams blasted an effort over the crossbar after a corner was only part-cleared.

Substitute Finley Shrimpton looked to make an impact, playing Collins through down the right. After a scramble in that part of the box, the ball eventually fell again for the latter but his ball across was saved by Simson.

In the closing stages, the visitors pressed but United blocked everything, with Riches making a brilliant low save from Bange right at the death, as full time was called and the game entered extra time.

Blackpool substitute Andy Kanga tricked his way into space down the left side of the United penalty area at the start of the first half of extra-time but, though his low cross into the box took a deflection, it landed in the hands of Riches.

A minute later, Shrimpton received the ball inside the area but was tackled before he could get a shot away. Then Silva curled a long range strike just wide of the post.

Ten minutes into extra time, Shaw came close for the away side as the ball dropped for him on the edge of the area. His effort went over the crossbar.

With half-time of extra time approaching, Graham forced a decent save from Riches with a powerful strike from the left side of the area. Very soon after, Kanga had a goal ruled out for offside.

Kanga was close again straight after the interval as he connected with a knockdown to send the ball goalwards but Riches saved at point blank range.

The away side finally went on 110 minutes as Graham slotted in from close range after being played in by Shaw. The visiting number 8 had held the ball up well after receiving it from McGladdery.

Both teams made changes in the closing stages but there were no more chances and the Seasiders advanced to the third round.
