Cameron Burgess: The whole squad is fighting

8 May 2018

Central defender Cameron Burgess was happy to have played in the 1-1 draw against Bradford, getting vital minutes under his belt ahead of the play-offs.

Burgess replaced Murray Wallace for the Iron’s last game of the regular season and felt it was a fair result.

Speaking to iFollow Iron, the 22-year-old speaks about his return, the game and looks forward to the big play-off games against Rotherham.

ON THE 1-1 DRAW…

CB: I would say it was pretty fair overall. I think we had a few chances and so did they. It was a pretty tight game. If we are being a bit critical, we wouldn’t like to concede from set pieces because I don’t think they opened us up too much. On a hot day, it was more about trying to pick the right passes, stay on the ball and do the right things.

ON THE RESPONSE SHOWN TO QUICKLY GET AN EQUALISER…

CB: We have shown that quite a lot this season. It is something we are quite good at and we know that we can always go and score against teams.

ON HIS PERFORMANCE…

CB: Considering it was my first game back in a little while, I was bit blown with the heat to be fair, but I enjoyed it. I felt it was quite comfortable for the most part. We were playing against some top players because Bradford are not an easy side to play against. They have shown that this season. I was delighted with how it went, but not the happiest that we conceded.

ON GETTING BACK INTO THE SIDE…

CB: It’s all about that game next weekend now and everybody wants to be playing. The whole squad is fighting, but it was great to get back out there and I am absolutely buzzing. Myself and a few others are included in that. It is a squad game so we need to be ready for the play-offs and it is good to get those minutes under our belts and get a bit of match fitness back.

ON THE PLAY-OFFS…

CB: We would have liked to have been one and two this season, but that has not happened and we are where we are. We deserve to be at least here and we have to go and prove that, showing the fans that we deserve to go and get promotion.

ON ROTHERHAM UNITED…

CB: They are a pretty solid team, keep the ball well and they know how to score goals. We have to play our own game and let them try and stop us because we have shown we can be a massive threat as well.

ON WANTING PROMOTION…

CB: That is what it is all about – we want that promotion to play at that next level. We want to play in the Championship where everyone in this squad believes where we can be. Everyone knows we can go and play at that level so we need to go and show it now.
