Iron sign Funso Ojo

18 July 2017

Scunthorpe United have beaten off competition from a number of clubs to sign Belgian midfielder Funso Ojo on a free transfer.

Amongst the interested parties were three top-flight Dutch clubs, but the 25-year-old has signed a three-year deal at Glanford Park following his departure from Willem II.

A former PSV Eindhoven team-mate of Iron striker Kevin van Veen, the 5ft 10in defensive midfielder also played for the youth sides of Olse Merksem and Germinal Beerschot.

Ojo made his debut as a B-Junior in the PSV first team during May 2007, then coached by Ronald Koeman.

He went on to make a further 11 appearances for them before a loan spell at VVV-Venlo.

He went on to play for Beerschot AC, Royal Antwerp, FC Dordrecht and then Willem II, where he has appeared almost 60 times in the Dutch top flight during the past two seasons.

Ojo has also appeared at every level between Under-15 and Under-21 for Belgium, and becomes the Iron’s fourth signing of the summer as we prepare for the start of the new League One season.

He has already linked up with the United squad at their Austrian training camp for the rest of this week.

The transfer is subject to international clearance.
