Matt Gilks nominated for November player of the month

6 December 2017

Iron goalkeeper Matt Gilks has been nominated for the Sky Bet League One player of the month award for November.

The nomination comes following an almost perfect month, with Gilks conceding just one goal as the team picked up maximum points from four league games.

The United shot stopper also provided a string of fine saves across the month, including a trio of impressive stops against Charlton Athletic at the end of the month with the score at 0-0 before the Iron went onto win 2-0.

Gilks will come up against Blackburn Rovers' Charlie Mulgrew, Max Power from Wigan Athletic and Oxford United striker Wes Thomas.

The judging panel comprises Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman; League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet EFL Trader Mikey Mumford.

Here is what the judging panel had to say about the four candidates:

Matt Gilks (Scunthorpe United) – goalkeeper

The vocal leader and last line of a Scunthorpe defence which conceded just a single goal in four games. Commanding in his area, it was his shot-stopping ability which preserved wins over promotion rivals Bradford and Charlton.

Charlie Mulgrew (Blackburn Rovers) – central defender

Led by example as Rovers rampaged through November. Not content to play a pivotal role at the back, he shouldered the responsibility to convert two penalties among his four goals, which also included a delightful free-kick at Blackpool.

Max Power (Wigan Athletic) – midfielder

Thrust further upfield to fill the hole left by Nick Powell’s injury, Power responded with energy and intelligence, linking up with Will Grigg and providing two assists from corners which helped Wigan move top of Sky Bet League One.

Wes Thomas (Oxford United) - striker

Injury cost him most of last season, but it has given him the spur to make up for lost time this campaign. Always willing to run the channels tirelessly for his team, he found the net three times in four November games.

The winner of the award will be announced at 6am on Friday morning.
